Sufi Meditation and Journey into Higher Realms of Consciousness

INTRODUCTION

Sufi meditation is not merely an exercise in calming the mind — it is a journey inward, to the source of consciousness, where the inner light merges with the infinite Light of the Creator.
Each stage brings us closer to the spiritual presence of the shaykh, who serves as a bridge between our heart and the unseen worlds.
When the heart is ready, this connection can expand into astral travel — an experience where awareness frees itself from the body and touches higher planes of reality.

On this path, techniques are secondary to purity of intention, constant inner awareness, and the protection granted through the love and guidance of the spiritual master.

Sufi meditation (murakaba) is an ancient path of inner transformation, connection with the spiritual guide (shaykh), and preparation for higher forms of perception — including experiences that some describe as astral projection.
This practice leads from inner visualization and breath awareness to complete dissolution in light and Divine Presence.

Stage 1: Meeting the Shaykh on the Spiritual Level

The goal of the first stage is to become aware of the shaykh’s presence, greet him respectfully, and maintain an inner connection with him.

Method:

  • Close your eyes and visualize yourself in the presence of your shaykh.
  • Do not focus on the face; instead, sense his aura and spiritual being.
  • Greet him as if you were physically with him.
  • Sit quietly and respectfully (kneeling or cross-legged).
  • Use your inner voice to converse with him.
  • Observe what the shaykh conveys to you, but verify any inspiration on the physical level before acting.

Astral Projection Link:
Visualizing the shaykh and entering his presence opens the inner eye and allows transition into higher states of consciousness — the first step toward out-of-body travel.

Stage 2: Heart Connection with the Shaykh

Once the first stage is mastered, the goal is to establish a flow of light between your heart and the heart of your shaykh.

Method:

  • Visualize a beam of light from the shaykh’s heart to yours, and another from your heart to his.
  • Maintain this connection during your daily dhikr.
  • Perform ablution, pray two rak‘ahs, recite the Shahada three times, say “Astaghfirullah al-Azim wa atubu ilayh” one hundred times, and recite Surah Al-Ikhlas three times.

Astral Projection Link:
The heart connection creates a stable energetic bridge that protects the traveler during transitions across realms of being.

Stage 3: Breath Control

The great Shaykh Abdulkhaliq Ghujdawani taught that breath control is the central pillar of this path.
The Divine Name Allah contains the letter Ha, which in exhalation expresses the essence of God.

Method:

  • Sit with eyes and mouth gently closed, tongue resting on the palate.
  • Touch thumb and index finger together (other fingers extended) to form the shape of “Allah” in Arabic.
  • Inhale through the nose: silently say “Hu Allah” and visualize white light entering your heart.
  • Exhale through the mouth: say “Hu” and visualize dark energy leaving your body — the negativity released with the carbon dioxide.
  • Breathe in rhythm with your heartbeat, sensing the inner sound “Allah”.

Astral Projection Link:
Conscious breathing stabilizes vibrational states, enabling an easier and safer exit from the body.

Stage 4: Clothing Yourself in the Shaykh’s Light

Method:

  • Ask the shaykh to clothe you in his light — the sacred robe given to him by Allah.
  • Visualize his heart above yours, his chin above your face.
  • Repeat: “Ya Sajjidi, Ya Mewlana Shaykh, Madad Ya Sahib al-Waqt”.
  • Sense his light filling the wounds of your soul and burning away the dark traces of past sins.

Astral Projection Link:
The shaykh’s light acts as an energetic shield and guide, ensuring safe passage through unseen realms.

Stage 5: Wearing the Shaykh’s Garment

This means complete dissolution of the ego through three principles:

  1. Maintaining love for the shaykh.
  2. Awareness of his constant presence.
  3. Accepting his will as your own.

Method:

  • Visualize always wearing his robe of light — in daily life and in prayer.
  • As you dissolve into him, he will take you to the presence of the Prophet, and then to the Divine Presence.

Astral Projection Link:
In this stage, the traveler transcends the limits of ego and body, reaching the state of “non-being” — union with the Divine Presence.

Practice Guidelines

  • Start with 5–15 minutes daily, gradually increasing duration.
  • Consistency is more important than length.
  • Master the basics — love, connection, and conscious breathing — before attempting advanced exercises.

CONCLUSION

As we dive deeper into the ocean of Sufi meditation, we realize that each visualization, each conscious breath, and each moment of connection with the shaykh is not a separate step, but part of the same flow of light.
This light teaches us how to walk between worlds without fear, how to recognize and transcend the illusions of the ego, and how to enter the stillness where only Divine Presence remains.
For those who also embark on the path of astral projection, the Sufi method becomes not only a preparation but a safe compass — a shield against unseen currents and a gateway to realms that open only to the pure of heart.
